To the Georgia Tech campus community:
As I have discussed at several meetings across campus the past severalmonths, we are preparing to embark on a strategic planning process toenvision what Georgia Tech should look like in 25 years, at the 150thanniversary of its founding. Once we have a clearer picture of theGeorgia Tech of the future, we can determine what we must do in thenext 12-18 months, the next 3-5 years and the next 10-12 years to helpbring this vision to fruition. It is my hope and expectation to be ableto formally announce and launch this initiative as part of theinauguration ceremony to be held on September 3, 2009. As you mightexpect, there is a considerable amount of planning and organizationthat must take part prior to this formal announcement to determineexactly how we should approach this effort and how it should beorganized so as to provide ample opportunities for input from theentire Georgia Tech community.
As a first step, I have invited the president’s cabinet, the collegedeans and the leaders of our affiliated organizations (Georgia TechFoundation, Georgia Tech Alumni Association and Georgia Tech AthleticAssociation) to come together on August 3, 2009, for a focused,day-long discussion designed to develop a preliminary list of the keyissues to be addressed.
This initial meeting will be followed by a second meeting on August 24,2009, of the president’s cabinet, the college deans, members of theStrategic Planning Steering Committee (yet to be identified) and othercampus leaders and invited guests. At this second meeting, which willbe held in the Student Center Theater from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.,we will set the stage for the strategic planning process and undertakebroader discussions of the issues and approach to be used.
It is my hope and expectation that these two meetings will lead up toand prepare us for the formal announcement on September 3, 2009, aspart of my inaugural address. Later that afternoon, we will invite theentire campus community to join in the discussion through a series ofdirected discussion sessions in order to develop a shared vision forGeorgia Tech. It is my hope that you will join in these discussions andthis process on both September 3 and in many other venues that will bescheduled throughout the academic year.
Over the course of the next several weeks, we will be developing anddistributing additional information on this process and the variousindividuals and groups involved. I look forward to working with you aswe undertake this initiative and build on our strong history andtraditions and develop a plan for the future of Georgia Tech.
